Call for a Visiting Teaching Staff Member of Asian Religions at the University of Tartu

The School of Theology and Religious Studies at the University of Tartu is calling for a visiting member of the teaching staff in the field of Asian religions (Visiting Professor / Associate Professor / Lecturer). The position is announced for two years, 01.01.2019–31.12.2020 (but the exact starting date is flexible). Deadline for submitting applications is 15.11.2018 (at 11:59 pm UTC+3). The position is financed by the University of Tartu ASTRA Project PER ASPERA (European Regional Development Fund).

Duties and responsibilities

Duties and responsibilities include teaching and research on South (and East) Asian religions at the School of Theology and Religious Studies. The research of the candidate should deal with the religious traditions and developments of the South (and East) Asia, have a clear focus and possibly approach it from an anthropological perspective. Additionally, he or she should contribute to courses and seminars on the method and theory of the study of religion. During the period of contract, the teaching fellow must organize one or two courses per semester (three lectures and seminars per year, particularly courses on Indian religious traditions and culture) and carry out research at least in the volume equivalent to three peer-reviewed articles. Supervising Bachelor’s and Master’s theses is encouraged.

Future perspectives

There is a possibility of extension depending on the ability to acquire additional funding. Future perspectives also will depend on the success of the Master’s programme in Asian and Middle Eastern studies that is currently being developed at the University of Tartu.

Required qualifications and premises

PhD degree or an equivalent qualification. The candidate is required to be a resident of a country other than Estonia, and to not have been an academic employee in Estonia for more than ten months in total, after 30.10.2010.

Required experience

The successful candidate should be experienced in teaching in English, supervising students and participating in research projects, including the ability and willingness to apply for additional research funding and the ability to organize research projects. The list of publications should include at least a monograph or five articles in peer-reviewed journals and books.

Required language skills

English, one relevant Asian language.
