On December 15 at 16:15 Matthew Louis Kalkman will defend his doctoral thesis "Enlightened Sovereignty: A Postsecular Semiotic "Image of God"" for obtaining degree of Doctor of Philosophy (in Religious Studies).

University of Tartu semioticians Andreas Ventsel and Mari-Liis Madisson, along with Junior Research Fellow in Information Resilience Diana Poudel, have developed tools for enhancing critical digital literacy in cooperation with international partners. The practical materials are designed for use in higher education, schools, companies and organisations to support navigating the digital landscape and countering the spread of disinformation.

On 27 October from 13–18, the University of Tartu development conference “A university for us, Estonia and the world” took place at the assembly hall of the university's main building and online to initiate a discussion on topics important for society and the university. The discussion were be based on the new University of Tartu strategic plan approved in June.

This year the Paulson Lectures in the Study of Religion will be held by Kevin Schilbrack. He is an internationally renown scholar of methodological and theoretical issues in study of religion.

On 20 October at 16:15 Aleksandra Sooniste will defend her doctoral thesis "Religious Literacy of Estonian Basic School Graduates" for obtaining the degree of Doctor of Philosophy (in Religious Studies).

On 13 October at 16:15 Ago Lilleorg will defend his doctoral thesis "A Study of Church Growth Using the Example of Estonian Protestant Churches. Formulating a Church Development Strategy" for obtaining the degree of Doctor of Philosophy (in Theology).

On 22 October, doctoral researchers of the University of Tartu have an opportunity to introduce their research results to the public in the format of a three-minute short lecture.

Next academic year, the professorship of liberal arts will be held by poet, children’s author and prosaist Viivi Luik.
